ILOILO – Together with Provincial Population Officer Ramon Yee, Governor Arthur Defensor Sr. led the blessing and inauguration of the 23rd school-based multi-purpose teen center in Alimodian town here on Tuesday.
Dubbed as the “Rombuhan Sang Kasanag Teen Center”, the project in Alimodian National Comprehensive High School is part of the Adolescent Health and Youth Development Program spearheaded by the Provincial Population Office.
Using a P300,000 budget, the teen center was built in a hope to prevent the incidence of teenage pregnancy and substance abuse among students and out-of-school youth in the town.
It would be manned by a guidance counselor and five peer helpers who were trained to provide individual and group counseling to any confused and troubled youth.
There were also recreational materials like board games inside the center for the students to use during their recess.
During the governor’s inspection, he said he would add more equipment and recreational materials in the center.
Among which were computer sets, television set, karaoke, chess board, scrabble, word factory, and musical instruments like guitars.
He would also build a comfort room/rest room next to the center for the convenience of the students.
“Forget gambling or trying any illegal drugs, make use of this teen center instead,” Defensor told the students.
He also hoped that the establishment of the teen centers province-wise would improve the quality of education in public schools.
“For us who are living in the countryside, education is the only thing that can help us escape poverty. So I urge you to study well and be a better person,” he stressed.
During the ceremony, the teen center was received by ANCHS Principal Ma. Phoebe Andiano and Alimodian Mayor Geefre A. Alonsabe. (Jezza A. Nepomoceno/Capitol News)
