ILOILO – Governor Arthur Defensor Sr. is counting on three national government agencies to ensure that no single boat will sail in Visayan Sea using Danish seine or modified Danish seine.
This developed after Defensor asked the Philippine National Police’s Maritime Command, Philippine Coast Guard and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Region 6 to join forces in implementing the Fisheries Administrative Order No. 246.
The order, which the Supreme Court recently upheld, imposes a nationwide ban on the two active fishing gears locally known as hulbot-hulbot for being unlawful.
According to Provincial Administrator Raul Banias, two coordination meetings have been held for such purpose and all the three national government agencies concerned have committed their support.
In fact, BFAR-6 will put up a satellite office in Carles just to support, among others, the entire operation against illegal fishing.
The Iloilo Provincial Bantay Dagat Task Force led by SPO1 Gilbert Piedad is currently on the forefront of the campaign against all forms of illegal fishing in the province.
Defensor, however, stressed that the effort of the province alone will not be enough to curb illegal fishing, especially in the Visayan Sea – one of the richest fishing grounds in the country.
It must be complemented by the national government agencies concerned and other local government units surrounding the Visayan Sea like Negros Occidental, Capiz, Cebu and Masbate, he said. #2014News
