ILOILO – Governor Arthur Defensor Sr. is initiating anew a milk feeding program benefiting wasted or severely malnourished children in ten remote barangays of Passi City come May 26.
Defensor said a total of 350 preschoolers will be feed with cow’s milk fresh from the province’s ART Center in Barangay Nanga, Pototan town for four consecutive months.
Eight hundred pieces of eggs or two for each child will also be given every week as a supplement, he said.
“We will feed each child with 100ml of milk daily and they can also bring home fresh eggs,” Defensor said.
The milk feeding program of the provincial government is on top of that of the Department of Education (DepEd) and Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
Earlier this year, Dr. Juan Araojo of DepEd Health and Nutrition Center disclosed that the province has 10,759 severely wasted pupils.
To combat malnutrition, DepEd tied up with the LGUs and Jollibee Group Foundation to intensify their existing nutrition programs.
Under the new partnership, Iloilo will get P21-million to rehabilitate at least 70 percent of the severely wasted pupils by providing hot meals using standardized indigenous recipes for 100-120 days.
The program also aims to ensure 85-100 percent attendance among beneficiaries and develop positive health and nutrition values and behaviour. #2014News
