ILOILO –The Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) under the Office of the President will honour this province as the “Most Outstanding Local Government Unit in Women Economic Empowerment Governance” this month.
The award will be received by Governor Arthur Defensor Sr. during the National Women Economic Empowerment (WEE) Forum to be held at Crown Plaza, Ortigas, Pasig City on September 19.
The WEE Forum is the culminating activity of PCW’s Gender-Responsive Economic Actions for Transformation (GREAT) Women Project that aims to promote and support microenterprises for women.
Beyond the award, PCW, in partnership with Department of Interior and Local Government, will confer to Iloilo the responsibility of being the learning hub for gender and development and women’s economic empowerment in the Philippines.
The title will showcase the province’s best practices in terms of knowledge, skills, abilities, and hard projects like the Pavia Livelihood Technology Center in Pavia town.
The provincial government gave P250,000 seed money for the realization of the project and sought the help of the Department of Agriculture, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, Department of Labor and Employment, Department of Trade and Industry and Department of Science and Technology to sustain it.
Same support was also given to Miagao town for the establishment of its Pasalubong Center last July. The project provided the women of Miagao the venue to display and sell their products to tourists visiting the famous Miagao Church.
Reports from the Provincial Planning and Development Office showed that Miagao’s Pasalubong Center has estimated monthly income of P80,000-P100,000.
Aside from this financial support, the provincial government also institutionalized its gender and development programs through a provincial ordinance enacted last year. (Jezza A. Nepomoceno/Capitol News)
