ILOILO – Four boxes of fish caught using dynamites were seized in Naburot Island, Carles town here over the weekend.
Fishery authorities took the dynamited fish weighing 240 kilos from motorboat “Mary Joy”.
Its crew, however, managed to escape, according to Iloilo Provincial Bantay Dagat Task Force Chief SPO1 Gilbert Piedad.
“…the motorbanca rushed to the shoreline and the crew/fishermen thereat jump overboard and run in several direction(s) leaving the same abandoned,” Piedad reported.
Aside from dynamited fish, Piedad said they also recovered two units of air compressors, four rolls of plastic hose, and stainless steel air tank.
Piedad said they then towed the motorboat and brought it to Concepcion town where a fish examiner was available at Northern Iloilo Polytechnic State College.
Fish Examiner Antonio Lobredo confirmed that the fishes seized were indeed caught using explosives, a violation of Section 88 of Republic Act 8550 or the Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998.
All the seized fishes have been disposed for consumption of patients in Sara District Hospital and personnel of Sara Police Station and San Dionisio Police Station.
The motorboat and diving accessories, on the other hand, were in the custody of the task force. (Jezza A. Nepomoceno/Capitol News)
