Iloilo awaits arrival of anti-rabies vaccines from Bill Gates

ILOILO – The last batch of anti-rabies vaccines from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is arriving in this province this July.

According to Provincial Veterinarian Dr. Silvino R. Teodosio Jr., 36 boxes of anti-rabies vaccines will be delivered here through the Department of Health before the month ends.

The anti-rabies vaccines from Bill and Melinda Gates will cover 70% of Iloilo’s dog population – 263,505 as of 2012.

The rest, on the other hand, will be shouldered both by the province (18 percent) and municipal (12 percent) government.

Once the supplies arrive, the Provincial Veterinary Office will immediately start the province-wide mass vaccination of dogs in their registry.

Last year, 77.07 percent of the province’s dog population has been vaccinated, while 2,345 stray dogs were eliminated.

The “Rabies-Free Visayas Program” funded by Bill and Melinda Gates is supposed to end this year but it was extended for two years. (Jezza A. Nepomoceno/Capitol News)
