19,904 elders benefiting from DSWD’s social pension in Negros


BACOLOD CITY, June 4 (PNA) — A total of 19,904 indigent senior citizens in Negros Occidental are now benefiting from social pension program of Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

DSWD Region 6 Information Officer May R. Castillo said these beneficiaries will receive a total of P29.5-million every quarter or P119.4-million by the end of the year.

Castillo also disclosed that social pension program has penetrated all the 32 local government units in Negros Occidental.

Of the LGUs covered, Kabankalan City has the most number of beneficiaries or 279 elders with P1.6-million annual allocation.

It is then followed by Cauayan town with 264 beneficiaries (P1.5 million), Sagay City with 233 beneficiaries (P1.3 million), Cadiz City with 232 beneficiaries (P1.3 million), Sipalay City with 218 beneficiaries (P1.3 million) and Calatrava town with 210 beneficiaries (P1.2 million).

The province’s capital, Bacolod City, has 169 beneficiaries with P1.04-million annual allocation.

The LGUs that have least beneficiaries are Talisay City (73 beneficiaries with P438,000 allocation), Pulupandan (90 beneficiaries with P540,000 allocation), Pontevedra (96 beneficiaries with P576,000 allocation) and Murcia (97 beneficiaries with P582,000 allocation).

DSWD’s social pension program is pursuant the implementation of Republic Act 9994 or the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010.

The program provides a monthly pension of P500 to elders aging 60 and above and who are living below poverty line. (PNA)
