BACOLOD CITY, May 29 (PNA) — The University Games set every third week of October in the metro will continue despite the withdrawal of some of its corporate sponsors.
UniGames President Roger Banzuela confirmed that they will pursue the tournament even if Sandugo, maker of sandal and other sports equipments, had withdrawn its sponsorship earlier this year.
“The show must go on,” he said while he refused to answer questions why Sandugo withdrawn from the list of sponsors.
He pointed out that there are still other corporate companies willing to support the event.
UniGames is supported and recognized by Philippine Sports Commission as the only legitimate tertiary sports competition in the country.
It is the brainchild of the late University of St. La Salle President, Bro. Rolando Dizon, and it started in USLS-Bacolod City on 1996.
UniGames gathers the finest varsity athletes from private and government universities from all over the country in the spirit of fair play, friendship and top-caliber competition.
Through the years, the UniGames has served as feeder of different national teams representing the Philippines in the Olympics, the Asian Games, Southeast Asian Games and other international sports competitions.
There are 12 sports events in the tournament and these are athletics, chess, taekwondo, badminton, basketball, football, table tennis, lawn tennis, swimming, volleyball, beach volleyball, karatedo, and sepak takraw. (PNA)
