BACOLOD CITY, May 21 (PNA) — Twenty-three food producers from Negros Occidental earned a total of P46.6-million in sales and booked orders during the four-day Asia’s Ethnic Food and Ingredients Show of International Food Exhibition (IFEX) Philippines last week.
Negros Occidental has been tapped by Center for International Trade Exhibition Missions (CITEM) as the primary partner for the country’s biggest government-organized food exhibition held from May 16-19 in SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.
Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr said the food exhibition provided a great opportunity for the province to promote its organic products both in the local and international market.
During the show, Marañon said that the most in demand products were muscovado, dried fish, frozen seafood, smoked fish, tea, pastries, herbal supplements, and sugar-free pastries.
Aside from organic products, the province was also drawing attention in the market for producing organic white, red, brown and black rice varieties.
Marañon said province was likewise strengthening the marketing of products out of its Livestock Breeding Program, as well as its Nutrition Milk Supplementation Program.
In fact, the province boosted the livestock breeding program by infusing quality breeder sheep stocks comprised of 5,760 heads of Dorper/Damara ewes and rams from Australia.
The province also imported 100 heads of Brahman cattle from Saranggani province and 100 heads of New Zealand dairy cattle using a loan from National Dairy Authority.
Marañon said they have established 10 “organic villages” in selected parts of the province as part of Negros Island Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development Program.
Such program seeks to devote 10 percent of agricultural lands of the island to organic farming and has gained the support of Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala.
Alcala himself declared the province as the current leader in organic farming which could be the reason why the province was the only local government unit invited in the international food exhibit, Marañon said. (PNA)
