BACOLOD CITY, May 14 (PNA)– Hundreds of supporters of an opposition mayoralty candidate belonging to United Negros Alliance (UNEGA) in Calatrava town, Negros Occidental staged picket Tuesday to protest the reelection of his rival.
Supporters of former Mayor Fernando Leonor gathered along the roads going to the municipal hall displaying placards urging the Board of Election Canvassers to stop the proclamation of incumbent Mayor Araceli Somosa of Nationalist People’s Coalition.
Chief Inspector Rolie Calatra-Pondevilla, Chief of Police of Calatrava Municipal Police Station, said they already deployed policemen in front of the municipal hall to prevent untoward incident while the canvassing of votes has yet to be completed.
As of 2:04 p.m., partial and unofficial results showed that Somosa is close to his reelection bid with 17,600 votes or a lead of 4,179 votes over Leonor who had 13,421 votes.
For the position of vice mayor, Virgilio Tan Sr. of NPC is leading early tally with 17,174 votes while his rival Nicolas Camara of UNEGA has 11,941 votes.
The figures represent 74 percent of turnout votes in the municipality. The canvassing is seen to be completed at 7:00 p.m.(PNA)
