BACOLOD CITY, May 3 (PNA) — Reelectionist Mayor Francisco Nazareno of Moises Padilla favors the inclusion of his town into the Commission on Election (Comelec) watchlist areas in Negros Occidental.
Nazareno said being in the watchlist is an advantage with additional security forces to ensure peaceful elections.
Moises Padilla is one of 11 local government units considered as election watchlist areas in the province due to intense political rivalry among candidates.
Others are the cities of Cadiz, Himamaylan, Sipalay, Victorias and the municipalities of Manapla, Toboso, Calatrava, Ilog and La Castellana.
Mayoralty candidate Ella Garcia, the daughter of the previous mayor, had complained that her supporters were allegedly harassed by Nazareno and some even barred from campaigning in certain areas in the town.
But Nazareno said it was him who was not allowed to campaign in haciendas owned by the Montilla-Garcia family.
“It is their camp who has constantly harassed my supporters,” Nazareno said, citing two incidents where two of his supporters were allegedly harassed by motorcycle-riding persons.
Provincial Election Supervisor Wil Arceno said he is monitoring the developments in the town. (PNA)
