BACOLOD CITY, May 2 (PNA)– Student-athletes who excelled in this year’s Palarong Pambansa will receive cash rewards from provincial government of Negros Occidental next week.

The rewards will be on top of incentives to be given by the Department of Education’s (DepEd) corporate sponsors, according to Provincial Sports Coordinator Head and Executive Assistant Angel Verdeflor.

Verdeflor said Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. has set aside P750,000 cash rewards to those who earn gold, silver and bronze medals in the national sports competition.

Last year, Verdeflor said Marañon gave out P50,000 to the region’s champion team, P30,000 for silver medalists and P10,000 for bronze.

For individual events, the champion received P10,000, second runner-up got P5,000 and third runner-up got P3,000.

The cash incentives, the official said, is in recognition of the impressive performance of the student-athletes in the province and to motivate others to do the same.

On the other hand, DepEd Provincial Sports Head Romeo Sison said their central office has received pledges in cash and in kind from the private sector amounting to over P2 million.

Scholarship grants to the winning student-athletes are also being readied, according to Education Secretary Armin A. Luistro.

This development,Luistro said is another proof of the private sector’s growing involvement in the holistic molding of the youth.

The financial reward is a complement to the usual medal and trophy awarded to the winning student athletes.
