BACOLOD CITY, April 24 (PNA) — Three out of seven boxers from Western Visayas advanced to the quarterfinals Wednesday in the ongoing 2013 Palarong Pambansa in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental.
Batang Pinoy gold medalists Arnel Jhude Rendon of Candoni and Mark Anthony Montinola of Himamaylan City, all in Negros Occidental, won their bouts along with Aklan’s Jasper Montesa.
Rendon, who outscored John Lloyd Cortez of Region 3, is facing Felmar Antiga of Cotabato Region (Region 12) in the quarterfinals. Antiga first defeated Michael Bacelona of Bicol.
Montinola, on the other hand, defeated Allan Balit of ARMM and Ronald Cerbito of Eastern Visayas.
He is then set to fight against Matthew Jagmis of MIMAROPA who outscored Mohammad Kaider Banua of Region 9 in boys’ light flyweight (49kgs) in the quarterfinals.
Jasper Montesa will face Ronilo Lagasan, Jr. of Region 10 in school boys light paperweight.
Montesa earlier won over Lem Compra of CALABARZON, while Lagasan defeated John Lie Bonnit of Region 2.
Warbel John Panuga of Candoni town, Negros Occidental suffered the worst defeat at the hands of Ilocos Region John Rein Gascon during their bout Tuesday.
The referee stopped the boxing of junior boys’ pinweight in the first round after Gascon hit Panuga in the head and left the latter unconcious.
Panuga was later brought to Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital for treatment. Panuga was declared out of danger and was released Wednesday noon from the hospital.
Gascon advanced in the quarterfinals and is set to fight against Keth Ceron Garces of Region 7.
Three other boxers from the region also lost their respective bouts in the elimination round.
Shechem Lirazan lost Roderick Masangkay of Region 3 in kids minimumweight (34kgs); Mark Chester Gaspar lost to Mark Lariosa of host Region 7; and Elmar Duoma lost to Wendell Plania of Region 12 (Cotabato) in school boys (38kgs). (PNA)
