DENR-6, LGU execs sign MOA to create responsive forest land use plan

BACOLOD CITY, March 14 (PNA) — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 6 assures to protect and sustain the diversity of forest land in San Carlos City in Negros Occidental.

This is after DENR Regional Executive Director Adeluisa G. Siapno and San Carlos City Mayor Gerardo P. Valmayor Jr. recently inked a memorandum of agreement creating a responsive forest land use plan (FLUP) for local government unit.

Under the agreement, the forest land use plan will be conceptualized within the context of sustainable forest management, biodiversity management and vulnerability assessment/climate change adaptation.

FLUP will also include matters on disaster risk reduction and management and reducing emission from deforestation and forest degradation in order to provide environmental, social and economic benefits for the society.

Valmayor has created a Technical Working Group (TWG) to ensure an effective preparation of the FLUP.

The TWG will be chaired by the city mayor himself and co-chaired by Forester Dinnis L. Parcon of DENR-PENRO Negros Occidental.

Siapno lauded the initiative of San Carlos City officials in their intent of coming up with an FLUP, which shall rationalize and define the appropriate uses of forests and forestlands in the locality. (PNA)
