BACOLOD CITY, March 8 (PNA) — Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. on Thursday gave out cash incentives amounting to P733,000 to more than 400 athletes who won in last month’s Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet held in Roxas City, Capiz.
Negros Occidental was adjudged as the over-all champion in the regional sports tournament after garnering 357 gold, 281 silver and 133 bronze medals.
Gold medalists received P1,200 each, while P800 and P600 were given to silver and bronze medalists, respectively.
The winners in various sports events will represent the region in the annual Palarong Pambansa in Dumaguete City later this year.
In his speech, Marañon told the athlete-medalists that the province and its people were very proud of them. He also urged them to keep up the good work and be passionate in the field of sports they were into.
Marañon also told them to practice harder so they could compete well or even beat the reigning National Capital Region (NCR) in the Palarong Pambansa.
On her part, Provincial Schools Division Supt. Dr. Juliet Jeruta congratulated the athletes coming from both private and public schools for winning the WVRAA championship crown. (PNA)
