BACOLOD CITY, March 8 (PNA) — Women’s volleyball teams from four cities in Visayas will compete in this year’s Canlaon City Women’s Open Volleyball Invitational “Pasayaw Festival” tournament starting Saturday until Sunday at Canlaon City’s multi-purpose gym.
The four competing volleyball teams are Bayawan City selection, University of St. La Salle Lady Stingers, Toyota Dumaguete and University of Southern Philippine Foundation of Cebu City, according to Roger A. Banzuela, former president of Philippine Volleyball Federation (PVF).
The teams will play single round robin elimination for ranking and the top two teams will play for the championship on Sunday. This is the second time that the volleyball tournament was held as part of the Canlaon City’s “Pasayaw Festival.”
Trophies and cash prizes amounting to P7,000 await the champion, while the 1st runner-up will get as much as P5, 000, P3, 000 for 2ndrunner-up and P1, 000 for 4th runner-up.
The festival’s name “Pasayaw” is a combination of “pasalamat pinaagi sa sayaw” or thanksgiving through a dance in English. It was created in celebration of the feast of St. Joseph the Worker, the city’s patron saint.
In previous celebration of the festival, street dancers used vegetables and other crops in thanksgiving for bountiful harvests that made Canlaon City the “vegetable basket and highland garden” of Negros Oriental. (PNA)
