BACOLOD CITY, March 7 (PNA) — Negros Occidental Provincial Police Office (NOPPO) Director Senior Supt. Celestino Guara maintained that policemen are apolitical and they are not manipulated by any politician, much less tycoon Educardo “Danding” Cojuanco.
Guara issued the statement following the discovery of December 20, 2012 letter of the former envoy asking the police’s support for the provincial candidates he is endorsing.
In his letter-request, Cojuangco wrote: “It is in this light that I write to you for your personal support. I humbly appeal to you to join me in our shared and continuing advocacy of promoting good governance at all levels of public service.”
He further wrote that: “Let us collectively and strongly give our support to our public servants whose stated platform of governance best addresses the concerns of our constituents and the challenges of the times.”
Though many of police officers in the province were scholars of the businessman, Guara said it does not mean that they can be dictated by him.
“We do have our own choice for candidates,” Guara stressed adding that “to support, serve, and act as private guard (of) any candidate is literally out of the police’ rule during the conduct of the election. We should not be partisan.”
Aside from giving scholarships to policemen, Cojuangco also sponsored some teachers in taking their master’s degree. (PNA)
