‘Freeze tuition fee hike,’ Legarda tells CHED

BACOLOD CITY, April 12 (PNA) — No less than the Nationalist People’s Coalition topnotch party-bearer and re-electionist Senator Loren Legarda is asking the Commission on Higher Education to halt any tuition fee increases this school year.

Legarda called for a moratorium following the looming proposal of 34 college and universities in the Visayas to increase their tuition fees to further enhance their operations and services.

Legarda said increasing tuition fees is added burden for parents unless certain measures are developed to counter it.

The senatorial candidate reiterated that her appeal for CHED is no joke since education is the primary backbone of her legislative development agenda.

“That is why I find education as more than just a necessity and I have created a solution, its Pantawid Tuition Program” Legarda said adding that she will review the efficiency of scholarship programs of state universities and colleges.

“I want to expand the scholarship base to give focus on agriculture, science and technology, environment, and possibly disaster science because those are the courses that are relevant to the people,” she stressed.

Legarda was in Negros Occidental Thursday to meet her local supporters in Bago City and Kabankalan City where she was guest of honor during the 63rd Commencement Exercises of the Central Philippines State University. (PNA)
